Grid-Tied vs Off-Grid Solar: Which Is Right for You?

Home solar comes in three basic setups: grid-tied, off-grid, and hybrid. The right one depends mostly on whether you have a utility connection, how important backup power is to you, and your budget.

Grid-tied (the most common)

A grid-tied system stays connected to the utility grid and needs no batteries. When your panels produce more than you use, the surplus flows to the grid for a credit; when they produce less, you draw from the grid as normal. This is the cheapest and simplest setup and the right choice for most homes. The one catch: for safety reasons a standard grid-tied system shuts off during a grid outage, so it does not provide backup power on its own.

Off-grid (fully independent)

An off-grid system has no utility connection at all, so it must include a battery bank to store energy for night and cloudy spells, and often a backup generator. You have no electricity bill, but you pay for that independence: off-grid systems are considerably more expensive because they have to be sized for the worst case, with enough panels and storage to carry you through. They make the most sense for remote properties where connecting to the grid would be costly or impossible.

Hybrid (grid-tied with a battery)

A hybrid system is grid-tied but adds a battery. You keep the simplicity and net-metering benefits of a grid connection, plus backup power when the grid goes down and the ability to store your own energy for the evening. It costs more than a plain grid-tied system because of the battery, but it is increasingly popular where outages are common or where the utility pays little for exported power. Which should you choose?

  • Grid-tied — best for the large majority of homes: lowest cost, simplest, and it maximizes bill savings.
  • Hybrid — if backup power or weak net metering matters to you and you are willing to pay for a battery.
  • Off-grid — mainly for remote sites with no practical grid connection.
