For the most part, no. Solar panels have no moving parts and are built to sit outdoors for decades in all kinds of weather. They are one of the lowest- maintenance improvements you can make to a home — but there are a few small things worth knowing.
In most places, rain does the cleaning for you. Panels only really need a wash if they get visibly dirty — from heavy dust, pollen, or bird droppings — and even then a rinse with a hose is usually enough. In dry, dusty regions you might clean them a few times a year; in rainy climates, rarely if ever. Dirty panels lose only a small amount of output, so there is no need to obsess over it.
Most systems come with monitoring (often an app) that shows how much electricity you are generating. Glancing at it now and then is the single most useful thing you can do: a sudden drop is your cue that something — shading, a dirty panel, or an inverter fault — needs attention.
Realistically, ongoing costs are small: the occasional clean, and typically one inverter replacement at some point. Because the panels keep producing with so little intervention, maintenance rarely changes the overall financial picture very much.
